Such was the timeless brilliance of Peter Alliss as a commentator for many years, it was easy to forget that he came to the microphone after many years paying his dues on the course.
In April 1958’s Golf Monthly, Fred Pignon profiled ‘one of the most brilliant players in the young school. Every inch an athlete…Peter Alliss could have been cast as a Hollywood film hero had he not been born the son of Percy Alliss, one of the most famous professionals of yesteryear.’
Reflecting on the family line, Alliss said, ‘It was a tremendous advantage to have doors opened to me by my father. But on the other hand, I have suffered by comparison with him.’
The full interview is as fascinating and engaging as an Alliss commentary and it’s well worth looking for it here.
