The annual Wales v England international is never one to be taken lightly, but Rugby World’s cover from March 1977, suggesting that comedian Max Boyce would be buried at sea if England triumphed was perhaps taking things a bit far.

Ahead of the game, Boyce contributed a lengthy piece of reminiscence to the magazine, recalling – with liberal application of poetic licence – the day Wales beat England 406 to 17 at Abernant Park, Glynneath…

“I remember the first time I played for Wales.

It was against England at Abernant Park,

Glynneath. I was nine at the time and after winning the toss,

I said, ‘I bags being Cliff Morgan!’”
