One of the great magazine traditions that has rather fallen by the wayside in more modern times is the cartoon page.

Some were funny, some missed the mark, and some you would never use in the modern world, but back in the day, they were a nice diversion amongst the heavier stuff, and a good way for an exasperated editor to fill a page of copy too.

This ‘Funfare’ page from Rugby World’s March 1973 issue was typical of the genre and you can find plenty more across their pages in the Magazine Archive.

You might want to seek this one out in particular, because it comes from an especially packed issue that sums up the All Blacks’ tour of Britain in 1973, including that legendary match against the Barbarians. You can find it all here.
