We were stepping into the future with the Caravan Club’s magazine in February 1997 as they unveiled this remarkable new thing called a satellite navigation system.

 

The VW Passat was to be fitted with TravelPilot, a CD-ROM based system, the first of its kind to be used in the UK. Stored in the boot-mounted CD drive, we were informed that, ‘The car’s rear abs sensors measure distance, while a concealed magnetic probe and roof-mounted Global Positioning System antenna (part of the radio aerial) take care of the car’s direction.’
